Graeme Byrnes

Location: Clarence River, Great Lakes Fisheries, Myall Lake, New South Wales, Smiths Lake, Tuggerah Lakes, Wallis Lake

Graeme is a 4th-generation professional fisherman based in the Forster Tuncurry region of the NSW Mid North coast. He started as a deckhand when he was 8 years old working with his father and grandfather. At 16, he acquired his first fishing licence and took over his own boat – the “Tanker” (his grandfather’s boat). He has mainly worked in Wallis Lake for over 30 years.

Why Graeme loves fishing: I love the daily mental challenge of working out where the fish may be based on the wind, tides, and season.

What Graeme loves about the marine environment: I love working with nature – observing the changes of the seasons and how that affects the marine environment. It’s constantly changing, which is a beautiful thing to witness.

Graeme was awarded the prestigious Star Of The Sea. This award recognises Graeme’s significant contribution to the development of the Australian seafood industry! Graeme supplies his catch to Great Lakes Fisheries.
